Sunrise Clinical Lab in Irvington, New Jersey, has been ordered to return over $3 million to Medicaid following a state audit that uncovered serious violations in drug testing compliance.
The Office of the State Comptroller examined Sunrise’s operations from July 2017 to April 2021 and found that in nearly a quarter of the sampled cases, the lab billed Medicaid without securing necessary physician signatures.
Further review revealed 44 situations in which drug tests ordered by doctors were not performed at all, jeopardizing patient safety and care.
Some physicians also reported their signatures were misused by lab staff, deepening concerns about possible Medicaid fraud.
Acting State Comptroller Shirley Nehmelu highlighted the urgent need for strict compliance to Medicaid regulations to safeguard both public funds and patient well-being.
