Newark's Code Blue Advisory Mobilizes Outreach for Unhoused Residents Amid Winter Storm |
City officials and organizations intensify efforts to shelter vulnerable populations as temperatures plummet |
As a significant winter storm approaches, Newark has activated a Code Blue Advisory to protect its unhoused residents from the impending cold. The advisory, effective from 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, to 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, anticipates temperatures dropping to a low of 24°F.
A Code Blue is declared when temperatures fall to 32°F or below, or when wind chills reach 0°F, posing severe health risks such as hypothermia and frostbite. In response, the city's Department of Health and Community Wellness urges residents, especially seniors and those with chronic health conditions, to take necessary precautions.
To support those without shelter, Newark's Office of Homeless Services has extended the operating hours and increased the capacity of local shelters. Street outreach teams are actively engaging with individuals on the streets, encouraging them to seek refuge in emergency shelters or warming centers. Residents who encounter someone in need can text "Path Home" to 855-11, connecting them directly with outreach teams ready to assist.
For families seeking shelter, the Miller Street Pathways to Housing Center at 41 Miller Street is available and can be contacted at (862) 229-4461. Adults without children can access the H.E.L.P. Center at 224 Sussex Avenue by calling (973) 705-7200. Additionally, residents experiencing heating issues in their homes are encouraged to report them to the Division of Code Enforcement at (973) 733-6471.
The city emphasizes the importance of community vigilance during this period. Checking on neighbors, particularly those who may be isolated, can make a significant difference in ensuring everyone's safety during the harsh winter conditions.
As Newark braces for the upcoming storm, the collaborative efforts of city officials, outreach workers, and community members are crucial in safeguarding the well-being of all residents, especially the most vulnerable. |
